Replace first, reset second
A filter indicator estimates time or usage; it does not test the remaining filter media directly. Install the correct replacement and check for leaks before resetting the light. Resetting early can erase the reminder while leaving an exhausted filter in service.
Button names and hold times vary by model and control-panel revision. Use the refrigerator manual rather than a generic sequence copied from a different appliance.
Typical reset process
Many refrigerators reset through a dedicated Filter Reset control or by holding a labeled button for several seconds. Others use two controls together or a settings menu. The display usually changes color, returns to 100 percent, or sounds a confirmation tone.
- Confirm the new cartridge is installed and flushed.
- Find Water Filter, Filter Reset, Reset, or Settings on the panel.
- Follow the exact model manual for the button combination and duration.
- Release the controls when the display confirms the reset.
- If the alert returns immediately, verify filter recognition and installation.
When the light will not reset
Check for a control lock, an incompletely seated filter, electronic filter recognition, or an incorrect replacement part. Power cycling may be included in a manufacturer's troubleshooting instructions, but it should not be used to conceal an installation problem.
Keep the installation date separately even when the refrigerator tracks filter life. A calendar reminder provides a backup if settings are lost after a power interruption.
